Ruby is a self-described realist. She doesn't believe in optimism nor pessimism. Instead believes in the harsh reality that people in general suck and on the whole have bad motives for everything and anything they do. Sure there are some good people, there are people out there who she believes in having good motives, but realistically...there's more bad than good and historically...the bad ones usually win. She's snarky and has a hard time not always speaking her mind. This has gotten her into trouble in many professional settings. She's not one to jump the gun and react without thinking, but she has been known to make a few bad choices without caring about the consequences. She very much believes that the ends justify the means. She considers herself very loyal though she doesn't usually get close enough to people to feel very loyal to them, at least not on a personal level. She believes in working hard and occasionally playing harder, sometimes taking in more than too much of her share when it comes to partying and booze.
Ruby grew up not knowing her parents. A fact that she tends to not tell people. Not because she's embarrassed or anything like that. No, she doesn't like sharing that little detail because people tend to then look at her with doe eyes and talk to her as if she was a wounded baby duck. There's few things she hates more than being thought of as a victim. She personally doesn't think that her past has had any effect on her life anyway, though if she was being honest and non-biased she would be hard-pressed to find a way that her history in the foster care system hasn't affected things.
She had a fairly normal adolescent and teen life. She, like many kids over the age of ten, didn't get adopted out. She instead stayed in the county home for as long as she could remember up until the time she left when she graduated. She made good grades in school and was accepted into Boston University. She graduated four years later and was then accepted into Penn State Law. When she gradated from Penn Law the 25 year old got a job on the legal team of McKenzie Law Firm in their criminal justice department. She had been there for a year when she had went out one night to celebrate winning a case. She had been drinking with her team while slowly they left to go to their homes. When she was about to call it a night, a guy insisted on buying her a drink. After that things got hazy. Before she passed out, the guy had gotten her out of the bar, said he was taking her home. She never made it home and he had taken his way with her. The next morning she had woken up alone and behind the bar near an alley. She had gone to the hospital where it was confirmed that she had been drugged and raped.
She then became hell-bent on finding the guy and making him pay for what he did. She and three of her closest friends on the legal team brought up charges against him. The case was brought to court, the evidence displayed, but the charges never stuck and all because of a simple technicality. The guy was a high-level soldier from the local military base, he called a few favors up and the case was thrown out. She had been devastated. She took a LOA from the firm who refused to put up charges against the military and decided it was time to move. At least..after she handled some unfinished business.
There was no sentencing, there was no jail time, there wasn't even a damn fine paid, but in the end, she was happy with the justice that was dealt by her own hands. After settling her loose ends, Ruby left Pennsylvania and moved to Lethford City, joining as junior partner in one of their law firms. She had been in the city for four months before all hell broke loose. Now she finds herself mostly taking cases fighting for patient and human rights against not only the local government that thinks they can do as they please, personal freedoms be damned, but the military presence as well. She tries to handle cases and wrongdoings in the legal manner, following guidelines and protocol. But if they fail...if the justice system lets down someone like her, someone undeserving, she doesn't mind getting her hands dirty on the other side of the law to make things right.
