OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

outbreak
/ˈaʊtbreɪk/ zero /ˈzɪərəʊ/
a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
Arlo stumbled out of the townhouse that her cousin lived it, rushing a little down the steps to start heading back towards the road. Her hands reaching up and securing the handmade mask back over her nose and mouth behind her head with the ties. She was glad that her cousin had made her a few, which were tucked in the canvas bag that was almost empty in her left hand. She had brought supplies out to her cousin and her small family. Their local shops were either closed or had no supplies thanks to a lot of people evacuating the city and flooding the area. Which is what prompted the text to the one person in the city that they trusted, which was the twenty two year old dispatcher. Her cousin had a compromised immune system so her leaving to the city was not an option.
And in return to bringing out a few basic supplies, her cousin had made her a few face masks now that things were starting to take a turn for the worse. Arlo was able to bargain a total of five masks out of her, with the idea that she would keep two to rotate and give away the other three to those closest to her. She felt ridiculous wearing it but knew that this was a good way to take an extra step to protect herself and those she cared for. Her curls were pinned away from her face which was a good thing, so that way she could see clearly over her mask. She requested just plain colors, no need for prints. And somehow she ended up with a printed one. And though she wouldn't admit it, she found it cute and was going to keep it for herself.
With the yellow, orange, and white floral print mask in place on her face, she set off to a brisk pace as she headed for a corner, ready to call for a car to take her back into the city. And that's when she caught a load of the time. "Damn," 8:05pm. It was just past the curfew that was put into place not too long ago. She thought about going back to her cousins, but she had planned on finishing up some more packing tonight. With her moving soon, she wanted to make sure everything was good to go beforehand, not last minute. Hopefully there would still be a car around to answer her page for one.
What she really hoped for, was that she wouldn't run into any trouble, with the military vehicles passing through every hour on the hour. She'd rather not have to answer as to why she was just 5 minutes past the curfew.
He had spent a long, long day in the lab. This virus had everyone on alert and his job had become exponentially more important and they made sure that he was not only aware, but doing the very most of his responsibilities. Benjamin Valentine was by far the most exhausted he had ever been. Eager to be home, he sped up a bit, rolling through the residential district in anticipation. It was just creeping up on 8 pm, the mandatory curfew for civilians. Anyone caught out after this time was subject to both questioning and testing. Biotech Prism Corp kept him safe from being too scrutinized when driving home no matter how long after curfew it had gotten. He ran a hand through his thick, dark hair, sighing in relief of just being alone for awhile.
Turning a corner, he was surprised to see a young woman, walking alone with a brightly colored home made mask covering her face. While Benjamin didn't particularly consider himself a gentleman, he did consider himself an upstanding citizen. It was only 8:05 and clearly this was not a woman who was supposed to be out and about this time of night. She looked like she was in the middle of contemplating what to do when Benjamin slowed his all black vehicle down. He pulled up close to the sidewalk, but far enough away that she wouldn't feel threatened by a dark and approaching car driven by a strange man, but close enough that she would be able to hear him when he called to her from his car window.
"Hey there," he called to her in as friendly a tone as he knew how "I don't wanna come off as creepy, but it's after curfew and I'd hate to see a young lady get herself into trouble for something as silly as walking home a little too late." He paused for a second before offering her a ride. "I don't live far from here, if you want a ride to your home. I'd be happy to give you my ID so you can send it to someone you trust, just for a little peace of mind." Again, even though he didn't consider himself a gentleman, he had sisters, and understood the precautions they felt necessary to take even before the outbreak. "I have a mask I'd be happy to wear too, just as an extra precaution." He stated as he slipped on his mask, a faint and friendly smile on his face before doing so.
He had no real reason for this type of charity other than every young woman reminded him of his younger sisters and what he would want for them in this kind of situation. There was no doubt in his mind that she would probably be okay, but in his mind it was always better to be safe and sorry.
Arlo stared down at her phone. No cars in the area. Great, that was just great, she thought as she slide her phone back into her jean's back pocket. She still had boxes to pack, her move into the new apartment was something that was coming up and she wasn't even close to being ready to actually go. She had probably boxed up one box, and it was stuff that she believed that she was probably going to go drop off at the donation center anyway because she didn't even know she had those items anymore.
She was about to turn around and head back to cousins townhome when a car stopping near her caught her attention. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as she turned slowly towards the voice, expecting a military vehicle to be the one beside her. But instead she was met with an average car with a not so average man talking to her from the drivers seat. She reached back and pulled her phone out of her pocket, as if to see if maybe the app had located a car and sent him her way, but as he spoke on, she knew that wasn't the case.
Normally, she would have laughed and ran away from such a request. It sounded like something from chapter one of 'how to get kidnapped 101'. But what she didn't want to do was go back to her cousins place, and she also didn't want to be picked up and arrested. How embarrassing to try and get let out of the police station where you worked? So she was a bit torn as he went on about an ID for her to be safe. Well that wasn't a bad idea. "Whats your name?" She called out, only taking two steps towards the vehicle before she stopped, getting a good look at his face as she waited for an answer. He was slipping a mask over his mouth and nose, a safety precaution. Just like the one she had over her face.
Brown eyes flickered down to her phone as she made probably a stupid decision. "I just need to be dropped off at the police station in town. I can get home from there." And with that she walked towards the back of his car, taking a picture of his license plate as she passed behind it. She sent off a text to her current roommate, letting her know that if she disappeared this was the vehicle she needed to put a BOLO on. She approached the passenger side window but didn't enter the car just yet. She reached back into her bag and produced her wallet, pulling her ID out and showing it to him so he would also know she wasn't a sketchy person trying to rob him. "Arlo Espinosa,"
Benjamin watched her hesitate when his vehicle approach, checking her phone and giving his car a cautious look. He could practically see her flitting through the options about who he could be, what he wanted, or if she was in any kind of trouble - smart of her, and luckily for her, unnecessary. The young woman approached the car, giving his face a close look as he slipped his mask over his facial features, making sure to get a good look at him before making a decision. The young lady walked toward, his car and asked for his name. "I'm Benjamin Valentine," he said formally, like he would when he would introduce himself to a new coworker. The young woman then walked to the back of his car, taking a picture of his license plate for those extra safety measures that he only could hope his sisters would take in this situation. Approaching the passenger side of the car, she produced her own photo ID with an introduction. "Arlo Espinosa", she said and he only glimpsed at her photo ID to confirm what she spoke to be true. He couldn't help but smile a bit, thinking she had a cute name in general. Before he reached for his wallet with his own ID he stated his actions, another precaution on his part to not come across like a creep. "I'm grabbing my wallet to show you my ID," with another smile, knowing it was the surest way to win anyone over. Scientifically proven. He thought to himself with another small smirk. Although it wasn't typical of him to pick up strangers or offer to go out of his way for them, all he could see were his younger sisters when he saw a young woman alone at night. The last thing he wanted to be was misogynistic but that core value of "protect the weak" stuck with him always, and it always seemed to pertain to women in his mind unintentionally.
He pulled out his lab badge and his driver's license, handing them toward her so she could photograph them if she felt it necessary. "No pressure to tell me anything at all, but isn't that the last place you want to be in front of after curfew?" Benjamin unlocked the doors and placed both hands on the wheel, again displaying that he was not a threat or intended to become one. He did find it odd that someone would want to be dropped off in front of the station after curfew but she could very well be an officer and feel safer walking home from there than having a stranger drop her off. He turned his classical cello collection down from the radio, as if someone who listened to classical music for fun wasn't unsettling all on it's own.
"Benjamin Valentine," She repeated back to him, as if saying it would make it known that she was memorizing the name. Arlo wasn't stupid, not by any means, even if she was getting in the car of a total stranger. She felt like it was almost like straight out of a Ted Bundy documentary as a handsome face came along, being a gentleman and offering to bring her home. But there had to be good people out there right? She certainly hoped so. Her brown eyes stared at him, her breath warm inside her mask as she watched him slowly reach for an ID. He produced a license and ID for work, Prism BioTech. Satisfied with it, she shook her head as he offered it to her for further inspection.
Both seemed legit, and she already had the details of his car to her trusted contact so she slowly reached in and slid into the passenger seat. His question on why she would want to be dropped off there made her smile beneath her mask. "I work there. So it's not a bad choice." She said, her eyebrow quirking up lightly as she looked over to him. With a quick movement, she buckled her seatbelt and placed her back between her feet. "And no offense, but I don't just go around giving out my address to anyone. No matter how charming they seem." She said with a small laugh. She was trying to make a possible awkward situation a little bit less of that. "I really appreciate it." She said, as she settled in and looked over at him.
"Are you heading home from work?" Could explain why he was also out past curfew and feeling confident enough to stop and let in a stranger to his car. He could have an out for why he was breaking curfew. From what she knew about Prism, they were working on trying to find a cure for the current sickness going around. So he would definitely be an essential employee.
Benjamin let out a sigh of relief as she settled into his car. He shouldn't care so much about what happens to a stranger that is breaking a curfew that is put in place for a damn good reason, but here he was, putting his own safety at risk for a young and pretty face. 'This whole gentleman act will probably be what gets you killed one day' He thought to himself, practically hearing his siblings laugh in the back of his mind. This probably wasn't about being a gentleman so much as it was about being protective of those around him. There was no pretending that he cared about what happened to strangers in most day to day instances - bad accident? drive away without a second look. Someone at the office or a family friend passed away at a reasonable time in life - he was un-phased. But there was a part of him that had a very natural instinct to protect, and he was pretty sure it was because of all the family meals and memories he had growing up and the tight relationship he has now with all of them to this day.
She answered his question in a way he hadn't quite expected. Arlo certainly didn't make him think of a police officer when he looked at her, but who was he to question how she had gotten into her choice of profession. She made a joke about not sharing information with charming strangers and he couldn't help but laugh wit her. "Fair enough, but I wouldn't call myself charming by any stretch of the imagination. Just trying to do more good than bad during all this madness." He paused for a second and then nodded once "I don't mind really. I have younger sisters," he explained "I know it sounds like some kind of weird play but seeing you on the street by yourself didn't sit right with me. It made me think of them in your shoes and what I would want for them." The tone of his voice accidentally became more serious than he had intended, so he let out a short cough as if to clear the tone from his voice and answered her other question "Yes, very long day at the lab, just staring at sequences over and over, looking for... anything. I have full confidence I'll find something important eventually..." Just the thought of the monotony of the task made him pinch the bridge of his nose even beneath the mask.
Benjamin let out a small sigh and stared ahead at the road in front of them. It was pretty empty even though it was just about time for patrols to hit the streets looking for people like them - out past curfew. It wasn't a far drive to the station and he only hoped that her walk was short and uninterrupted by patrols or crazy people who run out past curfew on purpose. He kept the speed of his car even, and unwavering just ready for his detour to get him closer to home and to feel some sense of self comfort for "doing the right thing" even though that thought in and of itself is entirely subjective and depending on the individual. He supposed he felt it was the right thing to do for himself.
Arlo raised a dark eyebrow at him as he said he didn't consider himself charming. Giving him that 'yeah okay' look over her mask. At his mention of younger sisters, she could see how him seeing a woman on the side of road looking at her phone might seem like a call to him to help out. Though she did find slight humor behind the situation. "So you'd approve of one of your sisters getting into a strangers car to attempt to get home instead of waiting to see if the car service would send anyone her way?" Her brown eyes peered at him, curious as to see what his answer would be. Considering they were talking about it, there was always that chance that maybe he didn't see it from that perspective either.
"I feel like if I had an older brother, this would be the exact situation he would warn me against." She teased lightly. She was an only child, and without a mother either. So her advice growing up had been from her aunt, and her father. Which he wasn't such a great role model. Taught her what to not look for in a man, that was damn sure. As he spoke about his job, she toyed with a loose string on the bottom of her shirt. "Well if you have half the determination to find it as you do to helping out strangers, I'm sure you will come across something." She wasn't sure about sequences or anything like that, so she didn't even really know what to imagine what he would be looking at across a screen.
The drive went for a bit in silence, his speed steady and never taking a turn that suggested he wasn't taking her to the station. She constantly was looking for something that would put a hinder in the travel, a patrol car, military hummer, something. But thankfully they seemed to have luck on their side tonight. Eventually she felt the need to break the silence. "What exactly do you do at Prism BioTech?" She was genuinely curious. She had heard rumors about them after the outbreak, ones that were questionable and down right terrifying if they were true.
Benji chuckled at the look Arlo gave him over her mask about him not believing he was charming, it was so easy to forget that looks were enough in most cases to make you seem more charming and approachable, "I wouldn't say I would encourage this behavior," he said with a serious tone "But I hope deep down that this is what would happen for them if they ended up in your shoes and I don't want to live in a world where the alternative is more common. So it makes me feel better as a man and as a brother to not be part of the violent crime statistics." He was very matter of fact with his words but it was the truth. The idea that men taking advantage of young women out there simply because they could made him sick to his core. He wasn't a gentleman but he was a protector and defender at his core. "Maybe I should have become a cop like yourself with all this self righteousness I carry." He joked, knowing that if you couldn't make fun of yourself your probably couldn't actually laugh.
He let out a small breath he hadn't realized he had been holding when talking about work. "I'd like to think that, but this virus is not making itself super obvious on my end of the field. Or anyone's I feel like." Another sigh before she asked what he did for Prism. Lots of folks had questions about the organization itself and what it had to do with containing the virus and stopping it all together. "I went to college with a major in Biology and a focus on genetics. My job at Prism essentially entails that I stare at different gene sequences that may or may not mutate into this virus. We're still so unsure of what's actually happening, they just want everyone to triple check everything that passes through just in case there is some new information about how the virus itself duplicates and spreads." He felt long winded in his explanation but it was probably the easiest way he could explain his job. Genetic sequences were only difficult when the mutation or change hides itself on a weird chromosome. He pinched the bridge of his nose again.
"Sorry I don't want to be dismissive, but again it's been a long day at work. What do you do at the station?" He changed the subject as they made a turn toward the neighborhood police station, hoping to not think about genetic codes anymore for the day. Benjamin could hear the classical music drifting calmly up to him through his speakers at a low volume, and despite all the madness and sickness happening around him he felt very at peace listening to his music and doing an act of service that would help him sleep a little easier tonight.
