Normally, when she got time off, Kai would take Louie out to the park for the day before getting a coffee at her favorite shop and heading home. They would jog, and then she would play fetch with him. However, with the quarantine, she was unable to take him to the park as per usual - so this rare morning when she had the day off, she put his harness on and got dressed - hiking boots, simple t-shirt, and a pair of jean shorts. The drive from her apartment to the hiking trails in the forest wasn't a long one and she reached her destination fairly quickly. She grabbed the small backpack she'd packed with snacks, dog treats, her water bottle, and Louie's favored fetch rope and pulled it onto her back. Louie jumped out of her trail blazer as soon as she opened the rear door. Kai did hook him to a leash that attached to her belt buckles, just for others' peace of mind. He was a well trained dog that listed very well...most of the time, anyways.

"C'mon, Louie." She said, making sure her vehicle was locked before setting off down one of the trails before her. She hadn't seen any other vehicles in this parking area, but the trails had another entrance. For the moment, though, it seemed she was alone. Kai let herself relax and sink into the nature surrounding her, pausing to let Louie sniff every so often. She didn't let herself think about work, or the riots, or the sickness spreading so quickly. They came across an open meadow-like area, and she stopped to throw Louie's rope with him for a moment.
[break][break]
Maybe twenty minutes had passed when she decided to give one last good throw for him - and watched the rope sail into the forest surrounding them. Kai smiled as Louie took off into the bushes, disappearing from view. She heard him crashing through the underbrush - and then, suddenly, silence. Her smile faltered, and she took a few steps in the direction he'd gone. "Louie?" She called, frowning softly as she started walking towards the bushes. Rustling sounded from the other side, and she felt a soft smile begin to curve at her mouth - of course, she thought, he'd lost the ball and had finally found it. Perhaps he'd gotten distracted by a bird-
[break][break]
-But no, no it wasn't a bird and it definitely wasn't Louie. What emerged from the bushes was a small, adorable black bear cub. The cub let out a shriek of what sounded like distress at the sight of her, and then Kai heard a sound like a chainsaw being held in mud, and the crash of the underbrush. Following that sound two things happened: Louie bolted from the bushes, letting out a sharp, anxious bark - and then the mother bear that was chasing him came crashing through right after him. "Oh my god." Kai breathed, frozen in her spot. Louie circled her legs and came lunging back towards the bear with a snarl, but Kai gave a sharp hand signal and the dog - blessedly - halted in his defense and retreated a few steps behind her. Kai kept her hands out to her sides, watching as the bear hopped from foot to foot and made a woofing sound. The clack of the bear's teeth as it stared her down made her breathing falter. "Shit." Kai cursed softly, moving so slow she felt like she wasn't moving at all - putting one foot slowly behind the other to create distance between her and the rather offended mother bear.
[break][break]
The only thing she knew about black bears was that you didn't run. They weren't as aggressive, and since Kai wasn't between mother and cub, if she just didn't panic and if Louie didn't try to attack the mother again, she should be able to just back away quietly. It didn't stop the hammering of her heart in her chest, or the jittery shaking in her limbs. She continued to back away, and by the time she'd reached the edge of the clearing, the mother and cub had turned back into the foliage. As soon as they were out of sight, Kai turned and took off back towards the trail, Louie hot on her heels. She exploded out into the trail, sliding into a sitting position and panting like she'd just run a mile. She didn't notice the person on the trail for a few more moments, but when she did she flinched, her hand coming to her hip instinctively - but alas, no gun. "Jesus." Kai rasped, trying to get her heartbeat under control while also pushing herself to her feet. Slightly embarrassed for her adrenaline rush, Kai turned her focus onto the person. "Sorry if I scared you. There was a -" She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly, "-a bear back there."
