a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
It was a noise from the back of the building, past the staff lounge that drew Lola's attention. The library had been closed since the infection began to spread and lockdown was put in place, but Lola stopped by a few times a week to make sure there was no looting or vandalism. There was a window broken the first week that she managed to get fix it. Some graffiti on the walls outside and paper toilet stolen from the bathroom. Food from the vending machines were also taken, but overall, the books hadn't be damaged.
Lola wasn't sure why she cared about the books. It wasn't like she was a real Librarian and she wasn't paid to patrol the Library and guarantee the collections were secured, but for some reason, she was growing attached to that place. It wasn't much the city, but the little things that came with it over the past few months.
The janitor greeting her every morning. The clerk at the coffee shop who apparently had memorized her order since it was almost always ready when she stopped by before her shift at work. The school kids and their Library excursions and the teenagers making out in the obscure books aisle. It became a routine that she now missed which was probably why she showed up to work even though she wasn't suppose to.
The building was now empty most of the time and its silence was eerie even for a Library, but it helped her picked up the strange noise. Rationally, it was probably not a good idea to check a noise by herself, but Lola was curious. Her gun was at home as she couldn't carry it openly with cops and military in town. Lola grabbed a baseball bat another staffer had left there before lockdown forced them away from work, and headed down the corridor outside the staff lounger towards the back exit.
She heard footsteps and caught sight of what looked like a kid running through the back door. "HEY!" she shouted and rushed after the person, but by the time she was outside the figure had already disappeared around a corner. "Hijo de puta," Lola cussed quietly as she turned to the door and noticed the broken lock.
Seraphina found herself doing something she normally didn't do: Go jogging at night. It wasn't as if the woman was scared of the things that go bump in the night-- far from it. If anything, she's the type to investigate those very things. Instead, she didn't care for night jogs was because there was little to no activity. The woman's daily runs usually took place in broad daylight for the sole purpose of people watching. She was curious by nature and wanted to be in the center of things to learn what was going on. If she wasn't in the middle, then she felt as if she was missing something and the woman couldn't afford that.
Maybe it was a mundane reason to prefer day jogs over night jogs, but to add onto the reason why she hated nightly jogs was due to the curfews. In the day she an unlimited amount of time to jog, but at night there was a time limit. The only reason why she was out here, at night, was because she didn't have enough time in the day to get in her morning exercise. Sera needed a positive outlet, especially during these times. Jogging was one of hers, and if she couldn't squeeze it in the day, then the night would be the alternate.
This particular night would prove interesting as when she was making her run, a person ran past her. That caused her to slow down as the person didn't seem to be a jogger, but was running away from something. Not too long after a woman appeared who shouted out after the person. Curiosity got the best of her and Sera jogged over to where the woman was to investigate.
"Hey," she sad back in reply to the woman. "Is everything alright?" She recognized her as the librarian to the library she frequents every now and then. She hoped everything was alright indeed. "Are you hurt?"
Lola was fuming and muttering swear words in Spanish as she stared at the broken lock, holding the baseball bat down. There was a frown setting on her face. She half-expected people to vandalize buildings, especially public ones. There was a reason she came to work despite everything being close; she was making sure the library wasn't burnt to the ground overnight, but Lola was still angry this had actually happened.
Footsteps and a voice drew her attention, and Lola half-turned to look at the woman approaching. The face looked very familiar. Lola saw a small number people at the library during a work shift. Books weren't exactly popular when google and the internet could give people faster answers, but there was still some movement before the quarantine was in place.
"No. I'm fine. Gracias," Lola assured the other woman, a small mile tugging in the corners of her lips. "Someone broke in," she added with a wave at the broken lock at the door. "And I'm pretty sure they didn't steal any boos." There was a hint of humor in her tone despite the scare.
"I need to find a way to block the door until I can get someone from the city to come take a look. I doubt the police will care for this." Lola had no interest in calling the cops either. "I'm Lola," she went on and held out a hand to the other woman. "You've been around, right? Before we were shut down anyway."
