stone cold |
Earlier in the morning, Ezra had arrived to work for the first day after the riots had broken out, her wounds barely visible at this point (of course, her hand was still wrapped up and healing), expecting to have a fairly normal day. Instead, she was pulled into no one other than the editor in chief's office, and told she was being assigned to work alongside a fellow journalist - Ezra had seen Seraphina around, of course, they worked in the same building. But Ezra had never worked with a partner, and she definitely wasn't happy about the assignment. The task? Gather information on the quarantine zone. Rumors of shady activity going on had spurred the idea, and Ezra was being forced to work with a partner because of the dangerousness of the situation. Of course, the boss had never explicitly stated that they needed to actually sneak in - but Ezra liked to live dangerously, and if she was going to be doing a piece on the quarantine zone, she was certainly going to actually go there.
She wasn't sure how Seraphina felt about it, unfortunately, because Ezra had never taken the time to get to know her - or anyone else outside of the few people she'd needed to do her job. Still, they'd come to the agreement to meet later that night just outside of the quarantine zone. They would enter, and leave, together. Ezra spent the rest of the day mentally preparing, already packing things in her mind. Once she got home, she changed into darker clothing - boots, jeans, and a black long sleeved t-shirt. Her hair she left down, tugging a dark knit cap over her blonde waves. She packed a small travel bag with a utility knife, a flash light, and her various investigation tools - recorder, note pad and pen - and as a second thought, she slipped a heavy duty hammer into the bag as well. It had many uses, with all of the crazy people running around lately.
Ezra slipped her camera over her head, letting it hang from the case's strap around her neck. Slipping the pack over a shoulder, she noted that she really needed to get her bike back - she left early to make sure she arrived at the right time, checking her phone's clock every few minutes. They were supposed to meet just before lights out - she was cutting it close. Coming up close to where the zone began, Ezra headed for a closed down gas station that they'd picked as their meetup spot. Walking around back, she hesitated, peering into the empty lot. It took her a minute to spot the other journalist in the darkness, but once she did she felt relief loosen her shoulders. For some reason, she was feeling antsy, as if someone might jump out at her at any given moment. Ezra closed the distance between her and Seraphina, "Hey." Ezra called, pitching her voice low so that it wouldn't carry on the wind. Though she didn't think that they had too many people assigned to guard the zone, if any at all this close to curfew.
"Have you seen anyone patrolling yet?" Ezra asked, once she was just a few paces away from Seraphina.
