No matter what his parents may say, Grayson is very intelligent. He easily plans ahead, has always had excellent grades at school and is a logical thinker that can come up with the craziest plans that always seem to work. That, however, doesn’t mean he will always put the effort in; he can definitely be lazy when he wants to be. He can also be the opposite and will overwork himself when he’s invested into something, not sleeping for days because he wants to continue working. Because of how he grew up he had to teach himself that it’s alright to say no sometimes, but he still often has trouble saying no to people and especially to superiors. He’ll also do anything for the people he cares about. But if he doesn’t like you, he’ll just ignore your existence.
He is a very loud and active person that likes talking, though some people would just call him obnoxious. He loves being the centre of attention, is laid-back and charismatic, and was very popular during his time at school due to this. Because of his upbringing he takes certain things for granted—often without even realising it. Despite this, he really doesn’t care about money and he will instantly dislike someone who shows off their wealth. He hates using his name to get things done, but—which might be a bit hypocritical of him—he will definitely do it if he sees no other way to accomplish something.
Born into a very well-known and rich family Grayson was used to getting everything he wanted the moment he asked for it. However, while he had everything he could possibly want, life wasn’t perfect. A lot was expected of him, being his parents’ only male heir and having a sister that was perfect at everything—he loved her, but the pressure of being as amazing as her was always enormous—, and Grayson was never able to keep up with the expectations. He put all his energy in his schoolwork, took more extracurriculars than what seemed humanly possible, learned foreign languages, but no matter how many times he was top of the class it was never enough. After a while, he just gave up on winning his parents' love. Why should he spend all his time doing schoolwork when it wasn’t appreciated? Maybe failing classes and sneaking out to parties would finally, if not approval, give him his parents’ attention. The only thing it brought him were some therapy sessions where he had to talk about why he was ruining his life.
The lack of attention combined with how often his parents were away on business had turned him into a very rebellious teenager, but after even that kind of behaviour didn’t elicit any real reaction from his parents he gave up on it and he became a lot more behaved. He didn’t get much choice when it came to choosing what he wanted to study at university and eventually he settled on biology, later on specialising in immunology. If he’d actually gotten the choice he would have picked something else, but he did like the study; especially the parts that focused on research.
Life was alright for a while—he moved into his own place, found his first job—until he decided to let his parents meet his boyfriend. Contrary to what he had expected, dinner went alright. But afterwards they pulled him to the side and started a speech on how he was always making bad decisions and was now ruining their chance at having grandchildren. He lost it and they got into a heated argument that ended with him storming out of the house and cutting contact with his parents. It hurt, but in the end he knew he’d never be able to be the son they wanted him to be.
He’d already stopped accepting his parents’ money years ago and so it wasn’t hard to live without them in his life. It lifted a huge weight off his shoulders and for the first time in his life he felt free to do whatever he wanted. Then the outbreak came. The company he worked at started putting more and more resources into finding a cure for GHNv-20 but no real progress was made. A month ago, his boyfriend got infected with the disease, dying two weeks later. Because of this Grayson quit his job and pulled all the strings he possibly could to be able to work on the sinoxyn trials.
He loves painting and drawing and would have studied art if not for his parents.
He goes by ‘Gray’ or ‘Jim’ and only ever uses his full name if he wants to impress someone. Nowadays he mostly uses Jim because he wants to distance himself from his family as much as possible.
Because his parents never actually disowned him the larger public doesn’t know how bad their relationship is and he’s still seen as the golden child.
He speaks French, Spanish and ASL.
