On the surface, Annika's a small ray of sunshine in the lives of those around her. She's kind, polite, proper, and considerate. She has a knack for getting things done efficiently and by the book, which made her a natural in every government department she's ever set foot in. She doesn't ask more questions than she needs to and doesn't speak when it doesn't suit her.
Beyond that facade upheld for her career, though, is a hesitant heart worn on her sleeve. Annika struggles to really let people in, appeasing with smiles that don't often reach her eyes. She struggles to see a grander picture for herself and tends to live day-to-day or week-to-week as it concerns her job and just surviving in general.
While she pines for depth and closeness with people, she's also petrified to lose them--this translates as indecisiveness in committing to plans, confusion in figuring out her own feelings toward people (both platonic and romantic), and even second-guessing others' motives in associating with her.
Annika was born into your average family with two older siblings--a brother (X) and a sister. Her early years were pretty standard. While she had your typical circle of friends growing up, she was always a bit envious of the closer bond her older siblings shared. It wasn't intentional on their part, but Annika always felt somewhat left out, like a third wheel of sorts. She was shy, as well, which didn't help things.
When she was only 10, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Annika had always been especially close with her mother, and the woman's death a year later was devastating. That much grief on an eleven-year-old's shoulders took its toll, and Anni withdrew from just about everyone. For the first few weeks, all she did was sleep and cry, looking through old photos and wishing she'd made just one last flower crown for her mom before she'd died. School was much harder and her grades suffered for a while. Despite having her brother, sister, and father still around, Annika found it difficult to get herself back on track.
It wasn't until late middle school, around age 13, that she really opened up again. She cemented a deep friendship with a long-time classmate named Anya. They became inseparable--Anni and Anya, like a pair of twins. Her world got brighter. Things became colorful in a way they hadn't been before.
By the time the two graduated high school (approx. 2011) they had already planned out attending the same college, getting an apartment, the works. The two studied business together at a university outside Lethford City and even got a small place together near campus within the following year (shortly after Anni's 18th birthday). Things were going well until Anya began suffering strange symptoms. What began as "probably allergies" turned into an immune system disorder that left her best friend weak, struggling, and a shadow of her former self. Anya continued studying at home, and Annika kept up with in-person coursework. In 2015, Annika graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Anni's high marks in her university program earned her a plethora of career opportunities. She was recruited to work for the federal government and considered it an absolute dream. There was so much to keep her mind busy, so many things to do, and so many chances to impress the right people and really earn a stable life for herself. She saved every spare penny she could to help Anya with her medical bills, while her work took her all around the country. She was away from home a lot and missed it daily.
In 2017, Anya's condition worsened and she was put in the hospital under the care of Nicholas, Annika's brother, as fate had it. While not overly close with him, Anni trusted that as a doctor he'd get her friend better--somehow, someway. He just would. He had to, right? But Anya's condition had worsened due to a malignant tumor in her brain--it'd gone unseen and untreated long enough to speed up her remaining days. And that's all she had: just days.
Anya passed away and Annika's trust in Nicholas--as well as doctors in general--was absolutely shattered. She was heartbroken and left the city once again. The following few years, she spent her time traveling the country for work, pouring all thought and energy into her job. She didn't sleep much, didn't eat much, didn't talk much: just worked. Work made the hurt in her heart duller and easier to manage.
In early 2020, the GHnV-20 virus was confirmed, and after struggling for some time with the decision, the world-shaking fear and fury that surrounded her as a federal employee became too much. Annika resigned and accepted a new position in Lethford City--working for the city's administrative department. She could handle liaisons with the military and police and shady suits. She just wanted to be home, because a part of her thought better of dying alone in Colorado or Maine or Texas with only a name plate and walk-in closet.
She'd been lucky so far to have not gotten sick--plushy and cozy private cubicles helped. But maybe being back home would prove to be her undoing. Only time could tell. At present, she's got an easy desk job with Lethford City Administration. She keeps her head down, looks the other way, takes her paycheck, and goes home to her apartment every night with more security than most.
