OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
Willa didn't have a problem with the military. Not at all. What she had a problem with was more people on scene than there needed to be. More people to possible contaminate something and then make her job harder. She didn't like it back in her earlier days. She certainly didn't like it now. But she wasn't going to shoo the woman off. If anything, maybe having a military personal involved could help her out. She wondered what kind of clearance she had, though had a feeling she didn't have more than herself in some ways.
"Welcome to the scene, Brooke," She said with a small smile, trying to ease the earlier tension that had lingered there. The two of them walked side by side, though Willa made a conscious effort to not use her long legs to take her downhill faster. "Assuming that they told me on the phone remains true, yes. It remains consistent with the others. It appears they are being dumped but no obvious signs of death when we arrive." She confirmed. Her hand raising to pull her hair back so that the chanced of her hair landing on the scene would be reduced.
She looked over to the woman as she spoke the next time. "In the coroner's reports it seems to remain consistent as well. And depending on what we see here, well, I might bet money on the fact that its probably the same as the others." A soft sigh left her. She didn't hope it was. She was hoping there would be more this time that would give them more of a direction to go in. That there would be more evidence to point her towards one thing instead of another. Instead of her just listening to her gut without anything to actually back up her thoughts.
Willa nodded at the explanation of why she was out in the woods and ran across the body. They came to the edge of the scene and Willa let her eyes roam over the scene in silence. Her mind connecting the pieces that she had seen in the folder that had been given to her. Brooke's voice was enough to break through her thoughts and have her attention turn back to the woman. "There is similarities but truly, I need to take a closer look. Here," She waved in front of them, letting her know that she was welcome to enter with her as Willa did herself. Approaching the body and crouching down when she was about a foot away to start taking in the details of what she saw.
The police station was surprisingly slow for the day. She knew if she spoke that out loud, everything would change. That the universe would hear her and laugh, and say 'oh yeah?' and then she'd be so overwhelmed with calls that would effect her that she'd have to work overtime. And overtime was the last thing on her list for the day. She had done that the past two shifts she worked. For once she wanted to head home and be in bed when she was supposed to. To get a full nights sleep. That's what she truly wanted.
She was flipping through some old cases, things that had been passed down to her and yet were still open. Willa had found some where she had to scratch her head and blink at the screen in surprise. The answers, and solves, to the case were all right there. She had even closed a few of them recently where she went and questioned other detectives. Just wondering what in the world they were actually doing when they were reading over all the clues in the case. All the interviews and information that was right there. In front of them. The entire time.
Another detective passed her desk, and as he did, he said "Slow day huh?" A groan left her mouth, her eyes glaring up to him. "Why would you say that?!" And as if the universe heard him, her phone went off. She stared at it for a moment, shooting another glare towards him before she accepted the call and pressed the phone to her ear. Hearing that there was a dead body that was found along the outskirts of the Hearth forest. She let out a small sigh, looking at the clock on the wall. She was thirty minutes away from being free. But that didn't matter now. She was now the detective on the case.
She arrived not too long after the call was made to her, pulling up in a dark sedan. Her suit was clean and pressed properly, deep navy in color as she approached the yellow tape that was up around the area. Though she was stopped quickly in her tracks as someone approached her. Willa did a once over on the woman and almost chuckled at her words. Yeah, this wasn't the first. This hopefully would be the last, but something inside of Willa told her it wouldn't be. "Pleasure is all mine Sergeant Hastings. Detective Traver, or Willa is just fine." She told her, trusting that the others had looked over her credentials, she lifted the tape and offered for her to duck under it. "Nothing quite feels right about it when this isn't the first body to be found on the outskirts."
Her long legs started down the path to where she could hear the chatter of the crime scene investigators. "How did you come across this body?" She asked, her eyes moving over to the other woman.
Willa wasn't sure how long she had stood at the window while she waited. She wasn't feeling impatient, nor was she someone who had a badge and demanded that she be answered to immediately. Well, most the time that was. She had an urgent side when she needed it. When a case was time sensitive or someones life was on the line, she definitely didn't just stand around and wait for some information. She'd go after it. But this was follow up, this was different. The doctors had a job to do and even though they had agreed to the date and time, the doctor was still on the clock and had patients to see and treat.
So when the door did finally open, she had a small smile on her face as she turned to him. He was older than her, handsome in all the traditional ways that one could think of. Surely he was smart, as she had been told he was a neurologist. And from what she knew, that wasn't the easiest to get a job in. So there was a certain amount of respect that had already been built for the man before she had even met him. Which was going to possibly help him out during their interaction, as she watched him with her dark eyes. There was a sense of observation in her look, but that just came with the job.
"Pleasure to meet you finally, Detective Traver. I’m Doctor Beau Atlas. I apologize that we couldn’t meet at the station this time."
She shook her head lightly at his apology. "No need to apologize. We all have jobs to do during this time. Thank you for taking time out of your day to speak with me. Hopefully you've had a good shift thus far?" Her voice light and polite, flashing a smile as he motioned to the seat she had placed her things in front of. She crossed the space within a few steps from her long legs and sank easily into the seat across from him. It was one of those seats that was covered in faux leather and had no lean to it, but it wasn't like people were supposed to spend long periods of time in the chairs. And the faux leather was probably the easiest for someone to clean and sanitize, which she was guessing happened on the regular now a days. Whether the room was used or not. It probably had a rotation with a check list somewhere on a nurses cart as they went about their new duties of cleaning.
"I pulled her file to help answer any questions I can."
She crossed her legs at the knee and took out a small pad of paper and a pen, though she placed those on the desk. After years of working cases, she was normally pretty good about remembering details without having to write them down. But she was never one to go in unprepared either. The paper was more of a 'just in case'. If there was a random number or someone that she had to contact that wasn't a name she already knew. More for spelling reasons than anything else. "I am just following up on a few things that the last detective seemed to have missed details on in their report." She admitted. She had been going over the files and found herself not exactly liking the way they were documented.
"It was said that the woman was treated after the raids. And that she had checked herself out early, before actually being released. Is that correct?" She knew that was correct, she had watched the footage herself. But she figured she would ease into the questions as she went. Confirming the information she already had before digging in deeper with the probing questions.
There was an alarm going off somewhere. It sounded familiar... it sounded like... her phone alarm. Yes, that's what it was. Willa groaned lightly from her bed. Her body buried under the blankets and pillows that were once tucked carefully over her bed. But now were tangled between her legs and blocking her from the outside light. She had barely crawled into bed a few moments ago. She had gotten home late, as always. These times were proving that regular over time was just a normal thing now. She showered, and went straight to bed. As her hand slipped between the sheets and finally snagged her phone she looked at the time.
16:15
With the groan making its appearance from her throat once more, she threw the covers off and slowly slipped to the floor. Letting the cold floors of her apartment wake her up quickly. She opened a drawer to her dresser and started pulling clothes back on. She had made an appointment to meet with a doctor at the Lethford hospital at 17:30 and she planned on making it there in time. And looking somewhat presentable as well. She dragged a brush through her brown hair in hopes of smoothing out the flyaways. It worked for the most part, and she wetted her hands and ran it through the rest to tame the rest.
She smoothed down the white button down she had on, and threw on a navy suit jacket with a pair of matching pants. Strapped her gun to the inside of her waist band in the back, secured her police badge to the inside of her jacket and tucked her wallet into the suit pocket as well. Heels on, and one last look in the mirror. She looked like a detective of course, and thankfully she didn't look as exhausted as her cases had made her feel over the past several weeks. So at least she wouldn't scare off the doctor she was meeting. Or make him look at her like he needed to be prescribing her medication to help her sleep or cope with something she had seen.
Willa made a pit stop at a local coffee shop and ordered an iced coffee for the meeting before she made it to the hospital. She stared up at the big building and wondered how many patients were currently staying in the rooms. How many were infected amongst the others that were there. How well the halls were cleaned. All of the questions that she was sure was easily answered by even the newest of staff in the building. But it was still stuff she wondered about before she would enter the place. She couldn't quite help it. But with a quick sip of the coffee, she slipped the mask over her face and made her way in the doors. The nurses station was well staffed when she approached and she smiled under her mask. "I have an appointment with Dr. Beau Atlas." She told them.
With a quick flash of her badge, the nurse nodded and told her to follow her back to an office that was set up for the two. She was the first to arrive, which was fine. Gave her time to sit down and down some more coffee before she had to go through her questions with a doctor. Still following up on the raids, still following up on missing numbers. It was a new face every time. And a new number each time. But that was part of her job now. When she was left to her own in the room, she removed her mask and stood by the window, looking out into the parking lot that was below it.
[attr="class","CONTENT"]A common theme with Willa is her friendliness. She is adventurous, imaginative, and curious to learn, which feeds into her desire to hear others' ideas and listening to their perception of things. This doesn’t mean she is all bubble gum and rainbows, however. She can be friendly without being a total pushover or having to redraw boundary lines with others. She has a little bit of sass behind her when she is taunted or teased, not afraid to dish out what is given to her. And she certainly has a quick wit, which has come out during investigations and interviews before. Wit and banter are what you likely will find with her. Though she isn’t bad at small talk either.
[attr="class","TITLE"]BIOGRAPHY
[attr="class","CONTENT"]Born as the second child out of four to her parents. Two boys, two girls. What a lucky couple to have it evenly work out like that. Though that was about as nice as the family's story got to be. Willa's father was a criminal. He was constantly in and out of jail or some sort of trouble. Bringing it home sometimes where the kids would find themselves locking themselves in a bathroom just waiting for it to be over. Their mother, while loving to the children, did nothing right by them. She allowed him to come back, time, and time again. With his false promises that things would be better this time. That he stopped his ways. He was on the straight and narrow now. And yet, every time, they would come full circle and end up back at the start.
The siblings really raised one another, their mother working small waitressing jobs here and there. Cleaning houses when she could. Any odd job that she could do to bring money home. Try to put food on the table and clothes on their backs. After so many visits however from police, the children were taken away when they realized how toxic of an environment they were living in. The bruises helped make that decision as well, seeing as how the older two of the siblings seemed to take the brunt of frustration that came from their father. Willa was only ten at the time.
Even though the siblings told them, being child services, over and over again that they wanted to be kept together. It didn't happen. It was hard to place four children altogether. This meant that Willa and her youngest brother were put into a home. Her older brother and younger sister were pulled into another home. Willa cried for days, not knowing what to do without the other two. She was reserved during her middle school years, remaining in foster care with her brother. Thankfully she got to keep him with her. She didn't really turn her attention around until she hit high school. Once she joined the ROTC program, she found that she really enjoyed the structure that it gave her. She was wickedly sharp, and always had done well academically, but this program challenged her. She even went on to join the track team during her sophomore year and even won the state in her senior year.
Though during her high school years, while she seemed put together there, she was in a battle with the courts over being deemed an adult. Her mother was trying to get custody of them once more. And at first, she was thrilled. Assuming that meant that her father was officially out of the picture and they could have a somewhat normal family. Poor or not. But that was the farthest thing from reality. As she went to a supervised visit, she realized that their father was very much involved. Willa applied to be officially declared an adult and released from the system at the age of sixteen. After months long processes, she was released but her brother was returned to her parents. She fought for custody of him when she was old enough but ultimately wasn’t able to provide everything the courts needed for her to gain custody.
Once she graduated, she got an academic scholarship for a college not far from her brother. Waiting to keep an eye out for him. She graduated with her bachelors degree and went right into the police academy. It reminded her of the ROTC program that she had liked during high school and wanted to do something with her life. Once on the force, she climbed the ladder quickly and found herself a detective role within the county.
During the pandemic break out, Lethford police had put out basically ‘help wanted’ in the department and she applied for the transfer to help out Lethford. Once accepted, she packed up her belongs and headed for the center of the break out.
