OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

[attr="class","CONTENT"] “Hello darkness my old friend” Kieran said softly to himself as he made his way onto the bus. He wore his usually bandana across his face, the backpack on his back had a pretty good-sized amount of stolen medical supplies from the hospital. As he sat on the bus, he felt just how dang cold it was outside. He hoped the snow would one day quit. He missed the Spring.
He hoped to make it back to the neighborhood he was delivering the stolen medical supplies to before it got too dark, but he wasn’t sure that was going to happen. He hated maneuvering about the city at night. As the bus began to move, Kieran didn’t really pay attention to the guy sitting across from him. There were quite a number of people on the bus, and this only reminded the thief the reason he mostly preferred to never ride the bus. The paranoia and anxiety he felt that anything could happen when too many people were together.
He then realized the man across from him nodded, so as the bus began continued to move, Kieran nodded back. He then noticed the mask the man was wearing, well, wasn’t this interesting, he wondered if he worked at the hospital he just stole from, but he preferred to not make conversation with anyone, so he remained quiet.
Not too soon after he nodded to the guy across from him, the bus began to spin out of control. The heavy snow combined with ice perhaps is what did the trick. As the bus crashed into a tree, Kieran now realized he had to keep the medical supplies close to him. The man across from him fell into him; hearing him apologize and the sound of the metal hitting the tree and some other people screaming, Kieran grabbing whatever he could to not fly, now realized the bus wasn’t going anywhere and he needed to get home.
“Don’t worry about it, man” Kieran said to him as he saw the man was trying to get his balance pretty much like everyone else. “We have to get off this bus. Cold or not it could explode” He said calmly to the guy as he looked around, seeing that some of the people on the bus had already flown out, he hoped that not too many were hurt too badly. “Damnit” Kieran said pissed off now realizing he would have to walk home at night.
He reached into his pocket to look at his cell. No service? He scrambled through the wrecked bus as he stood near the door. “You can stay here or come with me” He simply said to whomever may listen, including the guy who was sitting across from him. “We need help. I will go, whoever wants to go with me can do the same. But I ain’t staying here and waiting to die” He said his Texas accent thick as he made his way off the bus and into the night, hoping someone will follow him.
What a hell of a day. The Texan stood on the dark streets and sighed heavily. He didn’t remember the last time he could stand on the streets at night and not fear getting beat up or even worse killed. Kieran was always on the alert, looking around, this is why he never traveled alone, especially on a job, he always brought Atlas with him.
He met Atlas when he moved to Lethford City from Dallas Texas. He didn’t know why he left Dallas, maybe it was the memories of losing his family to this virus, or perhaps every corner he turned he was thrown into some sort of sad memory of another time. He moved to Lethford perhaps because this was someplace new, a place he only knew this way.
Atlas told him very little about himself. He told him he was from Seattle and that was about it. Kieran was the thief and Atlas was the con man. Whenever he was actually caught taking something, Atlas would talk them out of it. But what Kieran preferred was Atlas distracting someone while he stole his supplies he needed for their neighborhood.
Most of the people on the streets, or whomever lived around them could not afford to go to the hospital, and they needed supplies. They all depended on Kieran to get those supplies for them and he took the job very seriously. He didn’t know if Atlas truly cared about the residents who were sick around them, but Kieran didn’t care if he cared, all he knew was he was a good team member for his criminal network.
Growing up in Dallas he learned quickly if he needed something, he had to take it. He never grew up with money, he was always poor, and he became a thief only out of necessity for his family. But he made a rule to himself. He only took what he needed, he never took any more or any less. This worked out very well for Kieran.
He had a system in Lethford City. He and Atlas mostly did jobs together, and this was the emergency room at the hospital, he knew he would need his right-hand man and con man with him. “We are going in and out of there quickly, you hear me?” He said to Atlas with a serious expression on his face. He didn’t want to stay in there any longer than he had to.
The supplies they needed were from the emergency room. Kieran hated taking things from the emergency room of the hospital, his greatest fear was to get caught stealing there. As he walked into the ER, he looked around. He and Atlas would just look like patients, and then perhaps slip through into a supply room. Usually certain medications were locked up, this annoyed Kieran, he usually used Atlas to get the keys if he needed them.
He assumed this place would be chaos, which was nothing new, the entire city was chaos. Kieran looked around already annoyed. He had a bad feeling about this, but he was so desperate he did not follow his gut feeling of telling him to just turn around and leave. “Do what you have to do” He said to Atlas as he slipped by the reception desk that was already busy and not that many people working there. That was the easy part, but getting past a certain room was the hardest thing to do.
The sounds of the hospital only reminded him of Dallas. He stayed in the hospital for days as he watched his family die. The chaos of Texas was here as well, just not the memories of a normal time. He assumed once upon a time Lethford City was normal like any other city before the virus, but not now. As he walked past the room, assuming Atlas was paying attention, he then walked into a staff only room. Starring at the supplies he needed; he grinned. Not realizing they walked past a room that someone was in and they could easily be seen. “Make this quick Atlas, let’s take what we need” He said softly as he opened up the cabinet and began taking supplies. This would not be a normal supply room, for once the master thief was about to be caught stealing.
He stood in the darkness as he heard the people rioting around him. He often transferred goods here. This was a chaotic place, people still looting various stores trying to find the last bit of food. Kieran knew better, most of it was probably already gone, but these people were desperate, and Kieran understood how it felt to feel desperate for food. He grew up poor in Dallas, often struggling to even eat one meal. This was all so familiar to him, but the chaos was all new.
This place was a mess. He did miss a lot about Texas, but he also didn’t miss Texas at all. It was weird. He thought of his family all of the time. He wondered if they had lived through this virus, what would they think of all of this? His mother was the type of woman who hated violence. She had seen too much of it in her lifetime she would tell Kieran.
He believed that his mother was the reason why he never joined any gangs growing up in Dallas. He thought about it often. He thought about having a family that would have your back. He never would have learned all about guns if it wasn’t for some of his gang buddies, but when he started high school, he stayed away from all of them.
He kept himself busy in sports and also working out his perfect thieving skills. He would become a fantastic thief and he needed to work on it every single day in order to become that good. He stole only what was necessary though. He needed to feed his family, and he would steal only for that. He never went too far like his friend AJ.
He stared out upon the city as he sighed heavily. It was in shambles, and he assumed Dallas looks exactly like this. It was getting pretty bad when he left Dallas. Stores were being looted, people were rioting, and murders were everywhere. He assumed that would only follow him when he left Dallas, but at least the memories of those he had already lost will not follow him to Lethford.
He did think of AJ often. After he got taken to jail when he was 17, his friend disappeared. He assumed his parents sent him somewhere, but he wondered if AJ made it through this virus craziness, he knew he had to think of other things when moving to Lethford. So, Kieran thought of forming a thieving network.
The thief also knowns as Raven already had a reputation in Lethford, but none was Robin Hood. He knew this was an alias, and he knew he had to find him. Kieran already had Atlas on his team, now he needed to recruit more. Seeing AJ in Lethford shocked him, but he recruited the military man into his network quickly. The old friend was a good alliance to him. He was doing well stealing medical supplies and various other supplies for those who needed it. Kieran called them his family. They depended on him like his family in Texas, and his con man Atlas from Seattle, AJ his military buddy from Texas, and now he hoped he could recruit this Robin Hood to his team.
He tracked down the figure Robin Hood, this took time, research, and a lot of talking to other criminals, but he found him. He then began to follow him, wondering if he knew that he was being followed. He was quite surprised to find out who and what Robin Hood really was, but he knew that if he could recruit this guy to his cause, he would have one hell of a network. He told Atlas to meet him here, and hoped he would arrive. When Atlas arrives, he will then pursue the recruitment of this Robin Hood guy. Hearing about his thieving skills excited him. This guy was apparently damn good. Kieran would hit the damn jackpot if he got this guy. He needed some good thieves on his team. He had a wonderful con man in Atlas, and his military guy AJ, but having another good thief on his team would be great. He just stood there watching him hoping he didn’t see him. He knew he wasn’t that great at following people undetailed, but he hoped he could wait for Atlas to arrive before talking to this guy. Things were getting crazy though. Kieran knew he must make his move, so he approached with caution. “I am Kieran Boyle” He said with a smile on his face. “You and me need to talk Robin” He said calmly as he now hoped he wouldn’t either piss this guy off or cause him to leave. He really needed him on his team!
What a hell of a month. Kieran wished he could be back in Texas, sitting on his front porch, drinking his coffee, and staring out into the city that was ahead of him. The city of hope, food, people going to and from work, but this is not what the world was anymore, and it is because of GHNV-20. What a name for something that took his entire family. He hated this virus more than anything in the world right now, even more than he hated politicians.
When he left Texas, the city of Dallas was in chaos. He had to get away though, even though he knew that he was going right back to the same old chaos the virus had brought upon this world. There was no food in the grocery stores, and the thief knew that he could not stay in the same place that reminded him of the family he had lost.
He left a city that was in disarray, people attacking others, people climbing over one another to get a can of beans, but it was the last can of beans. Kieran had never seen anything like this before in his entire life, and he hoped that one day life would get back to normal, but he wasn’t sure that was ever going to happen again.
When he was younger, he learned to steal. He had perfected the art as a teenager, and he would only steal as much as he needed. He never stole anything he didn’t need, and his family lived well, but he refused to join the gangs, and he refused to steal above his own living limits. Kieran was a thief with a heart and only stole things that others truly needed.
As he stared upon Lethford City, he sighed. This was the same chaos he left in Texas, but he learned the streets, and the people who lived there. He knew that it was sooner than later that the military would intervene. People were in total disarray here too. Kieran knew that there were more people on the streets, where he lived, that truly needed medical care, and they couldn’t afford it.
Living in the shadows, it would be easy for Kieran to steal whatever medical supplies or food they would need. He then met Atlas. He was a con man from Seattle. He met him on the streets when he first moved to the city. They formed a plan to con some people out of the goods they had, and also conning hospital staff into sometimes giving them the medical supplies they needed. Kieran had order to the chaos he had brought to the neighborhood he was living in, and he did this all for the good of the people that he now considered his family.
He had to be careful, the murders and robberies that were going on around here were getting worse, and now the water supply that most used was contaminated. The military were doing home raids, and Kieran knew that it was only a matter of time before he and Atlas’s place was raided. If it was; he hid everything very well, but you never know.
Living anywhere in this city was dangerous now, but Kieran was right in the heart of danger. He robbed people, but not like some were getting robbed. The violence was not necessary, but he couldn’t do anything about that now. He thought of his friend AJ often. When he was taken to jail as a teenager, Kieran lost track of him. He had no idea if he was even alive.
The street ahead of him looked dark and dangerous, but most streets did in this city now. He could hear the people in the streets, it sounded like chaos was all around him. As he walked along the street, heading to the edge of the alleyway to meet Atlas there, he thought he saw someone who looked family. He appeared to be in uniform, but he shook his head dismissing the thought that AJ was here in the same city he was, a military man, no way the kid who was his criminal friend turned to the military, he laughed it off as he continued to walk, but in his mind, he knew that was the friend he knew long ago, would he notice him too?
