OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
Restless didn't even begin to describe how Tyler was feeling. Her back was on her clean white sheets of her bed. She was staring up at the ceiling, looking for anything that might seem like it was different than the rest of the white space of nothing above her. She had the top apartment in a very expensive building. It all was billed to her father, so she didn't even know how much rent was. Or perhaps it was a condo that her father just bought? Whatever the case, she was beyond bored. The lockdown had now rolled out the rule of being back home by 8pm unless you had essential business that had to be done.
Even though she was technically an essential, she also wasn't one of the ones who if caught outside past curfew would get by with a free pass. Being a translator, she was only needed during normal hours. When press conferences would be actually held, where she'd stand to the side of the podium of whoever was speaking and would be signing her little hands away. And the only other person using her for the other six languages she knew (outside of English) was her father. And since the tight curfew, he has not needed her past 6pm.
With a frustrated 'ugh' leaving her mouth, she pushed herself off the bed and stomped across her hard wood floor to her large closet. "I don't care that it's 11pm," she thought as she pulled on a pair of black leggings and a thin knit black top. Considering at night the weather can be a little cool, she pulls on a black and gray poncho wrap. She was keeping with the black clothing, hoping that it would help her to easily blend into the shadows if needed. Like all those movies where people sneak out to do spy like missions. Slipped into her knee high boots, she made her way out of her home and took the elevator down. No one else joined her, and no one was in the lobby of her building either, which made it easy for her to slip out the front unbothered.
The air was cool and whipped her blonde waves around her shoulders as she walked. She kept her head down and stayed to the edges of the sidewalks. She wasn't far from the popular downtown life, and it was so sad to see that where there used to be people all about, it was now a ghost town. It was almost an eerie feeling as she kept walking, starting to see signs that said the shops were closed or had effected hours due to state laws now. She stopped in front of one of her favorite little boutiques that has been closed down for a while now. And by the looks of it, nothing has entered or left the shop since the last time she was in there.
She used to stop in weekly, picking up a new item on the way home from work. But now she was stuck to not really shopping. She didn't do online items unless for accessories. She liked feeling the item before purchasing it. As she wondered when things would go back to normal, she was suddenly started out of her thought at a sound behind her. Tyler should have been paying more attention to what was going on around her instead of gazing into a closed store front.
Most of her day had been sleeping off a long night of skulking the streets looking for anyone stupid enough to break the curfew. They always got caught up in something, either dealing with all of the law enforcement or they'll run into someone like Whit. These are how her days often went: sleep past noon, pick pocket a few suckers in the West District and then supply herself with all her food and vices. Needless to say, supplying yourself strictly off a life of thievery wasn't easy but it was what she knew and she was very, very good at it. Men were especially easy, a charming smile and a flip of her long, red hair usually distracted them well enough for her to take things right out of their pockets and allow her to walk away none the wiser until she was long gone from their view and their life.
Even though the sun had long gone down, she hadn't returned home, still finding herself wandering the empty and cold streets. Restless was a good word to describe the state of the world and her state of mind. Nothing seemed like it was enough to keep her satisfied anymore. Most of it had to be due to boredom. There are less people to mess with, and therefore less income for her. Her boots didn't make much noise as she trudged along, pulling her hat a little further over her face and her scarf over her nose. She detested the cold on her skin, although the cold weather itself was far better than summer weather in her opinion. She had been staring at the ground for most of her walk around town. She had ducked through a few alleys and behind shops to avoid some of the patrols that were around and found herself in an area full of closed up stores and markets.
As soon as she took in her surroundings, she immediately landed her eyes on her nightly sucker. A woman, but that wasn't a deterrent. Women were easier to intimidate if all else failed. This blond woman was dressed nicely and seemed to be lost in thought standing in front of an old boutique. Despite the scarf covering her face, she smiled and began to approach the woman from across the street. Whit's steps closer seemed to alert the woman that she wasn't alone in the dark streets, and snapped out of her trance.
Even though she knew her face wasn't completely visible with all of her bundling, she made sure that her smile touched her eyes and that her voice was reassuring and friendly. She hiked her silly backpack that she had taken last week a little higher onto her shoulders and spoke her first lie of the evening "I used to love this place when it was open. I miss it." She got close enough to the woman to see all of her features well enough and make sure that her words are heard. "It's pretty late, though. It's not safe to walk alone. Especially with everything going on." While the statement wasn't untrue, she knew she was this woman's future problem.
Tyler looked into the store front, her blue eyes glancing over at the little items she could make in the dark store. There was nothing new there in front of her. It was all things she had gone in and seen before the place had shut down. But it didn’t mean she couldn’t admire them. There was a hand written sign on the door that apologized for the inconvenience but due to the circumstances, they were closed until further notice. She wondered if they would even reopen, considering that they wouldn’t have any flow of cash.
She had warned them that they should do online sales but they wanted to stay ‘one of a kind’ and have their clients come into the store. Not just click and have it shipped. Tyler could understand it. Heck she was one of those who went to the shop specifically for that reason. And the fact that a lot of times they used local artists or creators, which meant she was supporting her city. Her local artists. Ah, she missed going to galleries as well.
The voice behind her caused her to jump. She spun, her back pressing to the window as her hand flew to her chest. As if she could reach through her ribcage and calm the beating of her heart on her own. She let out a sound of surprise as she let her eyes land on the person before her. Anxiety immediately creeped up her throat as she realized the person was bundled, perhaps a bit too much for the cool air. It wasn’t exactly freezing out, enough that a jacket and some pants were good to go. So the fact that she couldn’t see anything except a small section of the persons face had her nervous.
From the build of the person, she guessed it was a woman. Red hair, light eyes. A backpack and a scarf covering the lower half. She let out a breath as she realized that she was commenting about the shop behind her. “Oh, you know this place?” Her voice was light as she peeked over her shoulder into the shop, as if it was going to give them more light on the sidewalk. That’s where it would fail her.
“I could say the same for you then, being out on the streets.” She commented lightly. Not sounding accusing or anything, but making a statement. Tyler knew all the insides of how things have been taking a spiral downhill lately. But maybe she didn’t know how much so.
words: 336. outfit: here notes: sorry its so much shorter this time!
The woman's reaction to her appearance almost made her giggle, the genuine surprise face and all of the typically motions of getting your back covered and addressing the noise, it was all fairly comical from her view point, but she knew better than to laugh. "Didn't mean to scare you, really." Although she had no real goal in mind as to what she wanted exactly from this woman, Whit knew the best move was to play it safe until she fully understood what the other party had on them. Too many deals gone bad from not being throuough in her opinion. Although she hadn't even known this place existed until just this moment, she nodded and looked into the dark windows along with her blue eyed street partner. She wasn't a native to the city, and only knew this neighborhood and it's shops for its crowd. There were all kinds of people Miss Poplar wanted to run into.
Whit eyed the thin blonde woman before her, sensing her anxiety. There was a lot to be anxious about currently, but she knew all to well it was probably just the fact another stranger was out so late and approached her so closely in the dead of night. The woman asked her a question, scrutinizing Whit for details. "Yes, I wouldn't say I was a regular but I had a lot of friends drag me in more than once." She had a small laugh on the end, but was sure to keep her tone hushed. No need to draw any of the officers on patrol this way. "I couldn't sleep. Things have been... weird. I don't think many of us are sleeping like our usual selves lately. It is a little warmer than I thought it would be this evening. Why are you out here, if you don't mind my asking?" Everything that came out of her mouth was smooth and even, and a complete lie. She went through the motions of unwrapping her scarf a bit, giving a gracious looking smile at the air on her face. Every step Whit took was with the aim of getting this woman to let her guard down.
