a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
Callie’s day had started out normal as usual - she woke up, showered, had breakfast on the go, and arrived at work about fifteen minutes early. She had to swipe her ID a total of five times to arrive at the lab she worked in every day with Doctor Hart, who would likely arrive in about an hour. The first thing she did was flip on every light she could, and then she went to work to preparing the testing they intended to do that day. These tasks would last her until the doctor arrived, and then she’d be doing whatever was asked of her until it was time to go home - which really just depended on if they got the results the doctor wanted to get. Sometimes she worked well into the night, and sometimes she got out earlier than expected. It was a pretty decent job, and Callie liked it well enough.
Only, that morning, as she was preparing a tray of test tubes, the phone in the lab rang. When she answered, the administrative staff on the other end informed her that they were a bit short handed on assistants up front, and advised her that she’d be needed for the afternoon to give a new scientist a tour of the facilities. It wasn’t as if she could refuse, but the moment she hung the phone up, she felt the nerves bubbling up. Callie always got nervous when they gave her new tasks, because she was so invested in this job that she didn’t want to disappoint. Plus, she’d not even seen the entire facility more than once - on her tour when they first hired her. Still, she bustled through her morning tasks, trying not to think about it. About ten minutes before she was supposed to meet the newcomer, Callie made her way to the front lobby and collected the badge that had been made for him. Looking it over, she was presented with a tiny picture of a decently attractive man, his name printed boldly on the ID card, much like hers. Collin Vandyne. It sounded so regal and fancy. She thanked the body at the front desk, smiling as she turned towards the doors, going from seeing him on his ID to catching sight of him entering the building.
Callie, friendly as ever, let a warm smile spread on her face. ”Collin Vandyne?” She greeted, walking towards him a few steps and holding out his ID. ”I’m Callie. I’ll be showing you around today.” With current times, she didn’t offer to shake his hand or touch him in any way, only getting close enough to be able to hand him his ID without making it awkward. ”They should already have you in the system, so this ID is your key to the building.” Callie told him, nodding towards the card that passed between them. ”I figured we could start by showing you where you’ll be working most often and work from there?” She offered, meeting his gaze with that warm smile firmly in place. Hopefully he couldn’t tell how nervous she was.
[attr="class","CONTENT"] It wasn’t the first time Collin was at Prism BioTech. He had visited a handful of times with his family, usually either touring around the premise or just going straight to the conference rooms. Size-wise it was almost identical to his father’s company and there was this hauntingly familiar smell in both buildings. Collin scrunched his nose as he entered, the doors automatically sliding close once he stepped further inside.
He was told there would be someone to assist him for the day, give him yet another tour and show him his workplace. Collin tried to politely decline but of course, it wasn’t something he could possibly have a choice in. It was all his father’s doing after all. And if he decided he needed a tour, he needed one.
Before he could even settle in a chipper blonde, a little bit too chipper for his taste, approached him, holding an ID with his face and name on, into his face. Eyebrows drew together in slight annoyance as he took the ID from her. "That would be me." he said, instead of thanking her like a regular human being. "So I’ve heard." he sighed, relaxing his eyebrows only to raise one in a semi-curious manner. He didn’t bother introducing himself. She already got a hold of his ID anyway. "ID keys have been around for a long time. I can tell. And maybe you should know this is not my first time here." Collin mention, clipping the ID card to his belt. He looked to his left, letting her finish her speech. Oh geeze, he hoped she didn’t have something like that prepared.
Pressing his lips slightly together and pulling his cheeks upward, his face slightly scrunched, he held out a hand to stop her from talking. "How about we start with the cafeteria? I could need a coffee." he announced, turning to the right and started walking in the direction where a sign with an arrow and a food symbol displayed the direction to his desired place. "Work can wait." the blonde added, his hand hovering over his mouth as a yawn escaped his lips.
Colling didn't glance over his shoulder to check if she was following him closely or not. "So, how's Sarah from the marketing team doing?" he asked Callie, a sly grin playing on his lips.
This wasn’t Callie’s first tango with someone who acted like the rest of the world was beneath them, though she was a little surprised at first, her expression softening as he spoke, responding with zero interest in her kindness. Alright then. She thought, her brows raising slightly before she relaxed her expression and softened her smile, clasping her hands behind her back and shrugging her shoulders. ”Welcome back?” She responded, quirking a brow at him as he raised a hand to stop her from continuing on. Probably for the best, she hadn’t really prepared a speech anyways.
Her head turned to follow him, wondering what had to happen to a person to make them quite so antisocial. Mentally shrugging it off - she didn’t hold grudges often - Callie quickly caught up with him, walking a few steps behind him and to his side. His stride was longer than hers, and she wasn’t about to jog just so she could walk by his side. He was asking her about a Sarah. Callie gave him a hesitant look, wondering if she was supposed to have known who that was? Did he think she worked in an administrative aspect? Well, that was at least a little fair. She was giving him a tour - or was she? - rather than doing lab work today. ”I wouldn’t know, I work down in the labs.” She replied, her tone amicable despite his response to her friendliness originally.
Staring at his profile, she tilted her head slightly. ”If you’ve been here before, do you even need...or, want, I guess...a tour?” She asked, her tone genuinely curious. Why had they pulled her from her work if this wasn’t his first time here? Surely they didn’t think he was so stupid he couldn’t find his own office. ”I can show you where you’ll be working, obviously, but just pointing out that you don’t seem to really need a thorough tour.” She stated, shrugging her shoulders lightly. If he really wanted to go through an entire tour, she’d obviously oblige. It was her job, after all.
[attr="class","CONTENT"] Collin didn’t really pay her much attention as she followed him, attempting to walk next to him. He only moved his head a little, looking at the corridor he was walking down most of the time. Prism didn’t seem like it had changed much and Collin figured the family who owned it didn’t either. He knew the business, the knew the people behind it all - including his father. They were all the same. Selfish, hungry for power and money.
He let out a frustrated sigh, irritation flickering over gaze as he stopped in his tracks, turning his body to look at the blonde. He had brought his hand up to his lips, rubbing the index finger over them in light annoyance. "Hang on, hang on. I’m not sure if I spoke some other language earlier but let me say it again: coffee. First. Tour or whatever, later." Collin told her, giving her a once-over as he bit his lower lip in eagerness to get his hands on a hot cup of shitty cafeteria coffee.
Dropping his hand, he let out a huff before continuing on his way. It didn't take much longer to arrive at said place which, fortunately, was empty. A quick glance at his watch told him that most workers were either done with their late lunch or already off work - although, he slightly doubted the latter with the amount of work everyone was drowning in.
Long strides quickly carried him over to the small counter. "Two coffees." he ordered, blue eyes watching the woman's gloved hands as she poured the dark liquid into paper cups. He grabbed his, leaving the second one for Callista to take, and made his way over to the small table set up with all the add-ons. The brunette dropped one sugar cube inside his coffee and stirred it with a disposable, wooden stick. "There are only three places I need to see." he said, taking a quick sip of the hot beverage, grimacing softly as he did so. Shitty as he remembered. "The laboratories and as you already mentioned, my office, and wherever you keep current studies and reports." he said, gesturing for her to lead the way to those places.
At this point, Callie was offended and as he huffed at her - she had simply asked a question, to clarify - she pressed her lips together and stared at him as if she were watching a toddler throw a tantrum, her brows raised slightly in disbelief. She’d thought she’d met people like him before, but his attitude was out of this world. She stood corrected on thinking she could handle this level of entitlement, and in her prickled state, she kept her mouth closed as they continued on to the cafeteria. He didn’t have to like her - plenty of people didn’t, and that wouldn’t have bothered her. But he didn’t have to be such an ass.
She was a little surprised he even ordered two coffees in the first place, and she flashed a small smile at the worker before she reached out for the second cup. Callie wasn’t big on coffee - not that he’d asked - but she didn’t want to waste it, either. Oddly enough, when Callie did partake in coffee, she preferred it black. As he spoke, she blew gently on her coffee, nodding her head as he listed off the places he wanted to see. Perfect. She could show him those places, and then she could get back to her own work and out of his hair. Win win. ”Records will be near the labs. This way.” She responded, turning and leading the way back out into the hall.
The labs were downstairs, and so she led him to the bank of elevators that would take them there. Pressing the button, Callie remained quiet, using the coffee as an excuse by lightly sipping it. It didn’t taste that bad to her. The doors opened with a soft sound, and Callie stepped inside, holding the door and waiting for him to join her before she pressed the floor for the labs, having to swipe her own badge to access the floor. The silence wasn’t her favorite - though she was comfortable enough to maintain it, still a little miffed over his bad attitude.
