OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

Maggie was freezing. The heater in her car had stopped working a few ago and she hadn't had the change to get it fixed yet. As the snow fell heavily outside she was definitely regretting her procrastination habit. Oh, and she also hadn't got snow tires on her car before winter hit. She was driving as carefully as she could but, well, black ice is impossible to see...which, you know, is why they call it that. The car lurched to the side and Maggie struggled to regain control. The car bumped into a snow bank, and her wheels spun out for a minute before the car sputtered and officially died.
Maggie smacked her palms against the steering wheel before gripping it and shaking the car in frustration. With a few turns of the key she got nothing more than the sound of the engine turning over, refusing to catch. She groaned and rested her forehead against the steering wheel for a minute.
She knew she couldn't just stay here though, so after a minute she pulled her coat around her, tossed on her hood and forced herself out into the snow. The snow fell so heavily that she couldn't even see exactly where she was but she was fairly certain she was somewhere near the bridge. The snow crunched under her feet as she started to walk up the road.
Elide was not someone that anyone would refer to as 'mechanically inclined' so when her car's lights randomly continued to blink on and off, she did what anyone with her skillset would do: ignored it. For months. So what if it made noise here or there? So what if the lights came on and off like her own personal Christmas light show? As long as it got her from place A to place B with a functioning speaker system, she was happy. Or rather, she had been happy, until it decided to die in the middle of a blizzard. Technically, it was the ice she hit driving way too fast for conditions that caused her to slide into a ditch that made it die but either way, the car wasn't starting and she figured she was probably to blame.
Elide had been sitting in the car for a while, begging the thing to start up again. She glanced at her phone, knowing it was charged but she hadn't been able to get service for some reason. She tried the emergency line again but the call wouldn't go through. She sighed in irritation, cursing herself for going outside in the snow. It wasn't actually like she had a choice. She had needed supplies. The fact that those supplies were mainly coffee, booze and ice cream was beside the point.
She groaned in irritation, looking out at her surroundings and wondering if she should try to sleep in her car for the night. The snow was piling up though and as she squinted she noticed, seemingly out of nowhere, a figure moving towards her. Elide screamed, an embarrassing girly scream before she noticed it was another person and not some sort of…whatever the hell her mind had instantly jumped to.
She cursed, zipping up her jacket and pushing the car door open. It looked like the decision to leave the car was made up for her. She called out to the other person, "Hey. Hi. Can I join you?" She grabbed the bottle of booze and slipped it into her leggings pocket, the bag of coffee under her arm and cradled a bag of cheetos and three boxes of candy in her arms like a baby.
She moved as fast as she could without slipping, over to the other person, a grin on her face, "I'm Elide. Can I join your little expedition? My crap car died on me."
NOTES ; Ignore the blonde in the Gif, it was the only one I could find with her in a parka lol
Maggie paused as she heard a voice call to what she assumed was her. She turned to find a woman traipsing through the snow towards her carrying an armful of treats...and coffee. She smiled at the unexpected guest. It was nice not to be alone. "Mine too," she said with an eye roll at her own car.
"Of course you can, I'd love the company. I'm Maggie. Here, let me help you," she reached for the bag of coffee under the girl's arm which looked like it would be the first to fall and if Elide didn't resist she'd carry it for her.
"Where are you headed?" she asked as she started walking again. Why she had decided on leggings today she would never know. They did nothing to keep back the chill and she was freezing.
Elide half jogged, half shuffled to catch up with the other girl. She sent up a silent thank-you that it was in fact, a female and not someone of the male variety. She had enough on her plate at the moment without worrying about some dude getting a hero complex or worse hitting on her. She could very much do without all of that at the moment. "Awesome, thanks." She moved her forehead on her arm, trying to get a rogue piece of her hair out of her face as the girl offered to help, grabbing the coffee from her arms. "Thanks. Nice to meet you Maggie, I'm Elide and yeah, same. I thought I was going to be a one woman snowdog team before I saw you." She grinned and shuffled the items so she could hold them easier, a free hand moving the strand of hair away from her face finally.
She walked in step with the other girl, thankful that she had worn her warmest winter coat. She had almost ordered groceries in, but then she hadn't met the minimum required amount so she had decided to stop being lazy and go do it herself. Nature, in all of its humor, seemed to be ensuring that she stopped being lazy indeed. The other girl asked where she was headed and she vaguely nodded ahead of them, "Straight that-a-way, the Brookgreene Apartments." She had a few blocks to go, more than she wanted to think about at the moment. "I might find somewhere warm to camp out until I can call my roommate though. What about you?" She looked over at the other girl. She wasn't entirely certain that Max would actually drive out in the snow to come get her, but it beat walking a few miles in blizzard conditions.
"Hey, is the library far from here?" She knew the coffee shops would be closed, as well as most of the restaurants. If she remembered correctly though, the library had a large lobby area that they sometimes left open and unlocked after hours so people could drop off books when they weren't open. Maybe if they were lucky, the building could provide a nice spot for warming up.
