OUTBREAK: ZERO is a semi post-apocalyptic pandemic roleplay set in the fictional city of Lethford, USA. Current season: Winter, 20/21.
March 2020. The world is in pandemonium as one month ago, GHNv-20 was confirmed, five months after the beginning of norovirus season. The number of the infected are in the higher hundred thousands, and the death toll is at an estimated 250,000, with about seventy percent of the rest of the population experiencing mild to moderate illnesses connected to the S. pyogenes bacteria.
The fear of the unknown has caused mass hysteria and panic.
In an attempt to provide a semblance of safety and control, military personnel patrol the streets, even here in Lethford City, and the police force is trying to keep up with the rising street violence, assault, and theft.
Welcome to OUTBREAK: zero. Will you survive?

a sudden occurrence of something unwelcome, such as war or disease. number, no quantity or number; nought; the figure 0.
She laughed lightly under her breath. “I suppose you are correct there. Maybe I need to approach my small talk a bit differently these days.” If there was one thing that was Tyler, it was her ability to find conversation with just about anyone in a professional setting. It was something private tutors were paid well for while she was growing up. Educating her on proper talking points, sounding educated on past events or even how to talk some stock options. It all was about helping out the family business. The languages was something that she wound up really enjoying and that’s why she worked doing what she did now.
Tyler understood the rush hour thing. She had been pulled over a few times since curfew started and had to go through a whole string of questions on why she was out and what she was doing. She of course huffed within three questions, especially when she flashed her government ID showing that she was clearly not just out for a joy ride. “Well depending on how much you have for me here, you might get to miss the rush hour. Only to be stopped by the lovely curfew patrol.” She did a slightly raise of her eyebrow, as if to show her disapproval of it. She had already recommended to the Mayor that they should issue special stickers for people who were supposed to be out. So that way they didn’t waste time pulling over every car they came across. There were other things that they should be worried about.
She settled into the seat in front of his desk as he gestured for her to do so. As the water was pulled out for them, she took the glass with grace and poured the water to an appropriate level before she took a sip, not caring that her glass took a light red tint to where he lips had rested on it. She cushioned the glass so it didn’t make a noise as she rested it back down. Proper etiquette and all from the blonde. A quick thank you left her as she watched him intently with what he was about to hand over to her. Well, slide over to her. She swiped up the file as he started explaining what it was, her blue eyes scanning the pages as she thumbed through the file.
“German and Yiddish, though there seems to be a few words in Russian maybe?” She saw a few odd marks in small places. Easily overlooked but fit in with what he was saying these pages were from. Post war. Her blue eyes looked up at him in question, brows pulling slightly together as she stared at the detective for a brief moment before she went back to the first page. “You found these from a burglary?” Sometimes she asked too many questions, but she liked to know what she was working with. Because she might be uncovering something in here that was sensitive information anyway. Her hand reached out to find a pen on his desk as she uncapped it, she looked back at him. “Do you have a pad of paper I can write on?”
It wasn't unusual for her to get called down to the station to help with some tasks. She was a government official, which mean she went where the government (or mayor) told her to go. What was unusual was the fact that she found someone needing her during the current times. From what she had seen from reports and heard from others was that there was a lack of activity lately. And it wasn't common anyway for her services to be requested on busy days. And that was really only when the mayor's office could afford to let her go as well.
So when the request was given to her, she was intrigued as to what could possibly be on the agenda for herself. She agreed to a day that worked around her usual tasks without causing her too much of an inconvenience but also wasn't so far away that she was neglecting the call for her help. She started her day at City Hall, her red heels matched her red lips and her short sleeved black dress was simple but clearly stated it had designer tags on the inside. It hugged her down to her knees with a small slit up the back to give her room to walk confidently as she normally did.
It was later in the evening when she finally arrived a few minutes before the agreed upon time. She parked her Audi in the lot and looked around. It was pretty empty, with curfew coming up and only the essentials needing to be there. Plus it didn't help that everyone wanted to get home before the power outages. She assumed that the station wouldn't be included in those, but she could be incredibly wrong and be required to run off of a generator. If that was even an option as well. She truly hated the shut downs and of course her condo was no exception to them either. Which only meant that she got to spend her nights annoyed with the fact that the AC was not on.
With her usual confidence, she entered the building and made her way down the familiar halls, a small clutch in her hand that held the essentials for her and a light cardigan in the other. Sometimes the station got cold while she was there and she didn't want to have to go back to her car if that was the case. Her heels clicked on the floor as she walked down the dark hallway towards a door that was open and light was pouring out from. And if that wasn't enough, a man's voice called out to her from the room. She found a small amused smile tug at the corner of her lips, was the heels really that big of a clue that it was her and not someone else? She assumed not a lot of officers or detectives wore them like she did.
His first statement came out before she had actual sight on the man, and she found herself answering him while she was still out in the hallway as well. "Not bad at all, just the usual rush of everyone trying to get home before curfew. Hopefully you have had an easy day?" It was worst than old rush hour, but she knew to keep that in mind when she left her officer. She was punctual from her years growing up and her father teaching her to do so. Always come prepared, to be early was to be on time, and make sure you make the person feel warm and welcomed by your presence.
"Can I get you anything? The coffee will probably burn any trace of the virus from your system but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re too attached to your stomach lining."
When he came into view, she had to admit she was bit surprised by how well he seemed put together. Not the usual button down and scuffed up shoes that every other detective wore. Instead, he looked almost... pristine. She recovered quickly though and gave him a polite smile. "A bottle of water, if you have one, would be lovely," she said as she entered the room. She didn't wait to be invited to place her stuff down, instead laying a cardigan over the back of a chair and placing her clutch down on the edge of his desk. She tucked a piece of her blonde hair behind her ear before she looked at him with bright blue eyes. "What can I assist you with Detective Carnegie?"
Tyler looked into the store front, her blue eyes glancing over at the little items she could make in the dark store. There was nothing new there in front of her. It was all things she had gone in and seen before the place had shut down. But it didn’t mean she couldn’t admire them. There was a hand written sign on the door that apologized for the inconvenience but due to the circumstances, they were closed until further notice. She wondered if they would even reopen, considering that they wouldn’t have any flow of cash.
She had warned them that they should do online sales but they wanted to stay ‘one of a kind’ and have their clients come into the store. Not just click and have it shipped. Tyler could understand it. Heck she was one of those who went to the shop specifically for that reason. And the fact that a lot of times they used local artists or creators, which meant she was supporting her city. Her local artists. Ah, she missed going to galleries as well.
The voice behind her caused her to jump. She spun, her back pressing to the window as her hand flew to her chest. As if she could reach through her ribcage and calm the beating of her heart on her own. She let out a sound of surprise as she let her eyes land on the person before her. Anxiety immediately creeped up her throat as she realized the person was bundled, perhaps a bit too much for the cool air. It wasn’t exactly freezing out, enough that a jacket and some pants were good to go. So the fact that she couldn’t see anything except a small section of the persons face had her nervous.
From the build of the person, she guessed it was a woman. Red hair, light eyes. A backpack and a scarf covering the lower half. She let out a breath as she realized that she was commenting about the shop behind her. “Oh, you know this place?” Her voice was light as she peeked over her shoulder into the shop, as if it was going to give them more light on the sidewalk. That’s where it would fail her.
“I could say the same for you then, being out on the streets.” She commented lightly. Not sounding accusing or anything, but making a statement. Tyler knew all the insides of how things have been taking a spiral downhill lately. But maybe she didn’t know how much so.
Restless didn't even begin to describe how Tyler was feeling. Her back was on her clean white sheets of her bed. She was staring up at the ceiling, looking for anything that might seem like it was different than the rest of the white space of nothing above her. She had the top apartment in a very expensive building. It all was billed to her father, so she didn't even know how much rent was. Or perhaps it was a condo that her father just bought? Whatever the case, she was beyond bored. The lockdown had now rolled out the rule of being back home by 8pm unless you had essential business that had to be done.
Even though she was technically an essential, she also wasn't one of the ones who if caught outside past curfew would get by with a free pass. Being a translator, she was only needed during normal hours. When press conferences would be actually held, where she'd stand to the side of the podium of whoever was speaking and would be signing her little hands away. And the only other person using her for the other six languages she knew (outside of English) was her father. And since the tight curfew, he has not needed her past 6pm.
With a frustrated 'ugh' leaving her mouth, she pushed herself off the bed and stomped across her hard wood floor to her large closet. "I don't care that it's 11pm," she thought as she pulled on a pair of black leggings and a thin knit black top. Considering at night the weather can be a little cool, she pulls on a black and gray poncho wrap. She was keeping with the black clothing, hoping that it would help her to easily blend into the shadows if needed. Like all those movies where people sneak out to do spy like missions. Slipped into her knee high boots, she made her way out of her home and took the elevator down. No one else joined her, and no one was in the lobby of her building either, which made it easy for her to slip out the front unbothered.
The air was cool and whipped her blonde waves around her shoulders as she walked. She kept her head down and stayed to the edges of the sidewalks. She wasn't far from the popular downtown life, and it was so sad to see that where there used to be people all about, it was now a ghost town. It was almost an eerie feeling as she kept walking, starting to see signs that said the shops were closed or had effected hours due to state laws now. She stopped in front of one of her favorite little boutiques that has been closed down for a while now. And by the looks of it, nothing has entered or left the shop since the last time she was in there.
She used to stop in weekly, picking up a new item on the way home from work. But now she was stuck to not really shopping. She didn't do online items unless for accessories. She liked feeling the item before purchasing it. As she wondered when things would go back to normal, she was suddenly started out of her thought at a sound behind her. Tyler should have been paying more attention to what was going on around her instead of gazing into a closed store front.
Confident, spoiled, and educated. Tyler is confident in her skills that she has learned over the years and has the ability to hold intelligent conversations. She keeps up to date on current events and had private tutors growing up her whole life. She is by no means a genius but has enough basic knowledge to be able to hold her on in a conversation, or at least knows how to fake her way through it until she can change the subject. Charming might be another good word for her, as she knows how to smile and win over different people she comes across, mainly learned through the plenty of benefits that her family has thrown over the years of her growing up.
Spoiled because she comes from a family who has never had to even think when swiping a card or anything of the sorts. Not only do they come from old money thanks to her great grandfather creating the business that he did, but her family has smart financial advisors and continues to pursue having the best clientele around. So Tyler grew up getting what she wanted, even if it took her a few pouts and "but daddy" arguments. Thankfully as she got older, and a bit more independent, she did seek out to continue her education and move away from the company. But she works on the side for her father as a translator when he has important CEO business, and she isn't busy with the local government job she holds.
BIOGRAPHY
Tyler grew up with an older sister and twin little brothers. All of the siblings were only about a year to two years apart. Their mother wanted the kids done quickly so she could have her body put back together after the pregnancies. Or at least that's what she told them. Having a silver spoon in her mouth, that would be a definite. The kids grew up pretty spoiled, if it kept it out of their mothers hair and from complaining so loud that her fathers business calls were interrupted, they got it. Looking back on it now, she could have grown up to have been much worse than how she turned out thanks to her own doing.
Her turn around really hit when she decided to go to college. She wound up majoring in communications, mainly due to the fact that she was already really good at speaking to many people. Growing up, there were lots of parties and benefits and really anything that could be thrown was thrown to show off how great the family way. Tyler was taught several languages growing up and really took to them, it being part of the reason her father really took much interest in her. She was able to translate for him between different people he was trying to make business deals with, and the fact that she was family made it seem so much more personal apparently. So it gave them a leg up in a way.
In college, she moved out, and even though she was still armed with the Halen family money, it was different for her. She got to make her own decisions on where she lived, who she spent her time around, and what she did with her spare time. By graduation, she was fluent in seven languages (American sign language, Spanish, Mandarin, French, German, Japanese, and Russian). She spoke Spanish and Mandarin before the end of high school and started learning ASL, but the rest were during her time at college. Lots of hours pouring over the languages and whenever she ran into someone who spoke a second or third language, she always asked them to not speak in English. It was fantastic practice for her.
She got a job at the local bookstore during college and did some ASL for book readings as well as regular restocking/check out duties that her father told her would look good on a resume. Sure, he was right in a way, had to have something on her resume and not just rely on the family name. Which is why she found something simple enough that she couldn't mess it up, and she had unlimited resources to read up on her studies during the slow times, which was frequent. Ty enjoyed the quiet as well, very different that being at home where everyone was constantly in and out and her brothers were constantly surrounding the house with their friends and such. Even the library at the school wasn't really quiet either.
Out of college, her name definitely pulled attention when she applied for the government job. Though she was glad that she actually could back up the fact that she knew what she was doing. Besides her father pulling her as a side 'help the family out' kind of thing, she was a bit unsure of her job at first. It was more of a part time gig, only when they actually needed her to translate during press conferences or any one on one meetings perhaps. But never a consistent thing. Sometimes an on call thing, sometimes with more a heads up. She also has been called over to the police department once or twice to help, considering it was a type of government. She volunteers at the local library in her spare time, specifically helping out in the kids area. She wasn't a huge fan of the idea of having her own but she liked watching their happy little faces run around and find books on things they love.
Though spoiled, she does have a heart under everything. Though she has lived quite a sheltered life compared to many others, not having to deal with the ugliness that is really out in the world. Her life has gotten a bit busier now that everyone is trying to figure out what was best to do for the city and surrounding areas, but her father is also trying to do damage control for his business. And if she wants to keep on his payroll, she needs to be available for him as well.
